How to "Blind" a Bird

Many turkey hunters from around the country have found incredible success slaying gobblers from the concealment of a blind. With a strategic game plan and a little luck, you can effectively implement a pop-up blind to your turkey-hunting arsenal, too.

In today’s market, there are literally hundreds of makes, models and mock-ups of hunting blinds that come in all shapes and sizes. 

One obvious way to brush your blind into the natural forage is dressing it up with your surrounding environment. This prevents wary birds from spotting a foreign blind in the field or wood line. Many new blinds offer both top and bottom loops that weave a 360-degree concealment system around the tent.

You may stuff corn stalks, grasses, cattails and almost any other vegetation that surrounds your ground blind position. Every time I place a blind into the forest, I’m very keen on making sure it has background and foreground cover. It breaks up the outline and decreases the shagged edges that deer and turkey seem to key in on.

My favorite benefit for using pop-up blinds with the right cover is that I can place them anywhere without hesitation. One blind in particular that I’m very fond of is the Summit Predator – it’s lightweight, sets up in seconds, side windows, and only weight 3.5 lbs.

They are extremely versatile and can be easily moved according to where you anticipate travel routes and roost areas. Most are fairly waterproof and prevent you leaving the woods early from an all out rainstorm. The vast majority of blinds are also lined with black interior to prevent game from seeing you. Blinds are a necessity in my neck of the woods. 

Hunters who understand the value of slipping into the confinements of a quality blind that blends into the surrounding landscape find them extremely useful. Their ease of use and user-friendly adaptability is what increases the odds of success in the field and forest when chasing game animals.

Choosing Your Turkey Decoy

Over the years, turkey decoys have been manufactured into nearly every shape, style, and design, but the main concept still remains the same – bringing gobblers into your lap. When the timing is on the money, you can effectively utilize decoys to increase your odds of bagging a bird.

Below you will find a brief review of how you can put your decoy to work best in the forest or field this spring.

The major reason to use decoys is to keep the focus off of you and on the new guy/gal – they offer a critical advantage of deception that you cannot find anywhere else. The finest imposter to use combines both realism and ease of transportation. By far, a three-dimensional decoy provides the best level of foolery for your foe. The lifelike design will calm the nerves and ease the tension of a wary gobbler that’s been deceived one too many times. Always make your best efforts to position your decoys in view of any oncoming birds from every angle, which allows birds to spot your fake in as many directions as possible.

The optimum benefit to a decoy that’s extremely portable is that it gives you the chance to be incredibly mobile. Many times, turkey hunters run-and-gun for birds, which makes the job difficult if you have to lug around cumbersome decoys made of hard plastic. Carry-Lite offers a perfect example of a decoy that is both realistic and easy to stuff into your vest. The Pretty Boy Jr. and Pretty Mama are lightweight, quiet, and collapsible. Unlike waterfowl hunting, you won’t need to scatter a barrage of 50 decoys in a field in hopes to wrangle a gobbler. In the wonderful world of turkey hunting, you can test one to even a few decoys. By staking a standing or feeding hen approximately 15 to 20 yards in front of your position, you will usually drag your gobbler into range. To attract your adversary, you can simply include a lone hen in your setup or add a jake or full strut tom to entice competition. In most case scenarios, a gobbler will gravitate toward your setup after spotting your fakes.

Coax Your Turkey With Realism

Morning sunshine accented vibrant shades of orange upon the prickly tips of towering white pines as the sun woke the forest floor. I cautiously watched my turkey decoy sway like an obscure black balloon in the corn stubble field yards away from my setup – patiently waiting for the king of the roost to break silence.

I tested his willpower with bittersweet talk to seduce his lovesick mind. With enough convincing and proper turkey etiquette, my hope would come true.

I soon spotted a long beard zip-lining his way to my decoys with vengeance – until he hit the infamous sixty-yard force field that we hunters call the “hang up range.” He stood perplexed, glaring at my decoys as if they were a foreign species or bizarre breed. The tom was as hung-up as a treble hook in a brush pile. Within minutes, I miserably watched him swagger back into the pines.

Many hunters have this type of bad luck with decoys and write them off, never to use them again. However, when you use realistic decoys, such as Carry-Lite turkey decoys - and use them correctly - luck has nothing to do with the gobblers they rein in.
