Well I have one more week to get through and I will be heading to Kansas. I am sure that this will be one of the longest weeks of the year. I will be racking my brain making sure I don’t forget anything. It takes a few days to pack everything for a twelve-day bowhunt. I usually wait to the last minute to pack whenever I am going on a trip, but on this particular hunt I like to be a little more prepared. We pull an enclosed trailer and have a pickup full of stands, clothes, and a lot of other hunting equipment. We look like the Beverly Hillbillies going down the road with all this stuff packed in the truck and trailer.
I have been watching the weather in the part of Kansas that we are going to be hunting and it is starting to get a little more like hunting weather. Talking to the guys that live out there and that I hunt, with they have been seeing more buck activity in the last few days. A lot of the beans and corn have not been harvested yet due to the wet weather that the Midwest had in the spring. With the corn and beans providing cover and food, the deer have pretty much everything they need and do not have to move a whole lot. The more crops that they harvest and get out of the field the better the hunting will get. Our timing should be perfect as far as hunting with the rut; hopefully those big bucks will be on their feet and cruising looking for does.
Hunting here at the house, man it was slow this weekend. We had a front come through with some rain and then it got pretty windy. I didn’t see a deer all weekend. I hunted one stand in particular that I always see a lot of deer from and I struck out there also. I don’t know what had the deer holding so tight and not moving, but I didn’t have many pictures on my game cameras either. With the cold weather moving in this week it should get these deer moving. I don’t know how much hunting I will get to do while I am trying to get everything packed up and ready to go, but hopefully I can get a day or two in before I leave.
