Successful Bear Hunt

A few days ago we were sent an interesting hunting success story by Sara Peterson. We thought we would share her story with the rest of the “Grow the Hunt” readers:

“Let me tell you about a great hunting experience that I had, it was made even more unique due to the Moultrie Game Spy I-40 digital camera that we had set up at the bait I was hunting.

I was recently bear hunting in Hibbing, Minn. The evening started with a quarter mile trek through the woods to my stand that was nestled a good 80 yards from the bait. The weather was rather balmy for this time of the year and the bugs were enough to drive a person insane, but I mustard up every ounce of sanity I could, and sat there waiting for a bear to come.

As dusk drew near I pulled up my rifle to take a peek through my scope to make sure I could still see my bait clearly. Just as I was starting to lower my rifle I saw movement to my left. I steadied my rifle and waited to see what was moving in. Out walked this beautiful bear. As he stepped into my line of fire, I aimed and squeezed off one round. As the round hit its target, the movement of the bear triggered our Moultrie trail camera. It took a picture of the bear right as it was hit, you can see where the impact is on the upper right shoulder. We had the camera set to take two pictures, so the next picture is of the bear dropping and rolling over at the bait. Needless to say there was no tracking involved that night.

When I tell this story, it is always accompanied by the pictures from the Moultrie trail camera. Thank you Moultrie for making a great hunt an awesome story. We can’t wait to see what other experiences we have with your cameras, and what you come out with next!”

Game Camera Helps Hunter Bag A 17-Point

Melvin Forseth sent us a picture of a great 17-point buck that he was able to harvest with the help of an older Moultrie camera.

Forseth had his camera out scouting an area that he typically doesn’t hunt. When he checked his camera he had a picture of this huge buck on it.

When the season opened Forseth was able to harvest the massive 17-point. After harvesting such a huge buck you would think that he would be ready to hang his bow up for the rest of the season, but that is not the case.

Forseth said he has pictures of several more nice bucks on his camera including a 170 class 10-point and a 180 class buck that he saw last year.

We would like to wish Forseth and the rest of the “Grow the Hunt” readers good luck this season.

Cool Alaskan Video

Check out this cool YouTube clip that was compiled from video using Moultrie I-40 and I-60 game cameras. The end of the clip shows why it is important to use a Camera Security Box when you put your camera in areas where there is a bear population. This video was taken in Talkeetna, Alaska. Do Big Deer Move More During a Full Moon?

Mike Hanback posted a blog on his Big Deer blog about how the moon affects deer movement. It seems that Hanback and one of his buddies are working on a new theory that big bucks are more likely to move around during a full moon. This theory goes against everything that hunters have thought about deer moving best around the dark moon phases.

If you have a Moultrie camera with the info strip on it, you can put Hanback’s theory to the test. Check your pictures and compare the moon phases and see if the big boys are showing up more around the full moon phase.

Minimum Age Requirements for Hunters?

We ran across a post on the Winded Bowhunter’s web site. After reading an article on MSNBC regarding the minimum age requirements for hunters, he posed an interesting question: Should there be an age requirement for hunting without supervision?

We all want to pass down the hunting tradition and, as many hunters know, your first trip into the woods alone is a right of passage.

Late Season Food Plot Prep

Jacob Edison, Managing Editor for Deer and Deer Hunting Magazine just posted a blog on the Rub Line reminding hunters that now is the time to start preparing your late season food plots by spraying them. Killing off the warm-season grasses from your late-season food plots now will make them that much easier to put in the ground at the end of the month.

Mark Kayser recently posted a blog on Outdoor Life’s Big Buck Zone reminding us that whitetail archery season is just around the corner, starting within the next two months in most places. Dueling Bucks

Scott Bestul posted a really cool video on Field and Stream’s Whitetail365 blog. The video is of 2 bucks on their hind legs going at it in a fight. Bestul points out that we all know bucks are likely to brawl during the rut but deer also “work out dominance issues year-round; biologists feel that the pecking orders established when bucks are in summer bachelor groups save deer from wasting energy by engaging in non-stop brawling during the breeding season.”

That may explain why many of our “Grow the Hunt” readers have captured photos of deer like this one that was recently uploaded to the photo gallery by Todd Radmer. If any of you have cool photos like this, be sure to upload them to the photo gallery.
