From the early beginning of camouflage design, to the dynamic construction of an infrared-sensing trail camera, each and every product started out as a simple idea. It’s an amazing reality to realize each product we use in some way, shape or form can be credited to someone with a creative mind.
Some products are introduced into the outdoor market because of a problem-solution situation. Humans are very brilliant and innovative creatures. We have the ability to facilitate and improve problems technologically. The archery industry has advanced so rapidly that it’s almost mind-boggling to wonder what’s coming next.
Throughout my own hunting experiences, I’ve stirred around a few new ideas and product inventions. Sadly, they’d probably make it as far as my next meal. Regardless, it’s nice to dream big. I often have the pleasure of meeting some of these product gurus during outdoor tradeshows. I’ve been absolutely blessed to meet two inspiring inventors within the last couple months. They bring their expertise by solving troublesome situations that ultimately give outdoors people a better outdoor experience.
Last week, my uncle gave me the invite to attend a telecommunications trade show with him. Considering I know as much about telecommunications as I understand nanotechnology, I said what the heck. The convention was located only a few miles from my house. I figured I’d make a stop, see my uncle, and grab some dinner.
As I circled the show floor, I began talking with a gentleman by the name of David Sumner. Come to find out, he shared the same passion for the outdoors as me. We talked about deer hunting, fishing, and before we could transition to the next subject, he reached behind his booth. Sumner revealed a small, green and meshed object that I couldn’t quite figure out. He handed the plastic object to me and I was very excited, even though I still couldn’t recognize what it was.
Sumner explained that this was his creation for turkey hunters and any outdoors person. The product is called, Turkey Dave. I opened the lightweight plastic and it finally dawned on me. It was a footrest. All of us know the feeling of sitting with your back against a tree. It isn’t too bad, for the first hour. As time goes on, your legs and feet go completely numb. I’ve personally dealt with this problem for years. My remedy was trying to find a log or large branch to rest my feet on. This footrest solves several issues, including stability, movement and comfort.
Just like everyone else, I asked myself, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Products are always being developed, altered and upgraded. I always enjoy catching what’s new on the hunting store’s shelves. New products from across the world are invented daily; it just takes the right mindset and variables to make that idea into a reality.
Sometimes the simplest products are the most effective. Someone just has to take an idea to fruition.
